“The Value of a Fitted Kitchen”
By Jess Whitehead
Besides stunning unique designs, people want practical, highly functional, working kitchens that work for them and their unique requirements, one simply does not work without the other. There is no point in having your dream looking kitchen if you can’t cook a good roast dinner, store all of your random items (acquired throughout the years) or even make a good cup of tea (assuming you’re from Yorkshire and know what that means).

To achieve this, we must first work out the bespoke floor plan and structure of the ideal fitted kitchen to suit your home, and more importantly how you want to feel within that space? Plus, how it needs to work for you and your family? Before we dive into colour schemes and details. Don’t get me wrong, the key to clever design can be within the details, but details can be best within the structure of the design, those hidden draws are perfect for your spices and cutlery, right down to a designated space for the dog food to be stored.

At Studio 35 we specialise in creating bespoke fitted kitchens for the individual user and their unique environment. The beauty of a fitted kitchen is that it appears to belong, it isn’t stuck, added, or squashed into a space. Instead, it’s a part of the room, sometimes the architecture within your home: it looks like it’s meant to be there and works like you couldn’t live without it.
To achieve a successful fitted kitchen, we must first understand you and your requirements…

As a conscious consumer, you must first work out what you require from your fitted kitchen, this can be aided by our Studio 35 Pre-Design Brief. This is our first initial step when meeting new customers, as it allows us to learn a little more about yourself, your project, your wants/needs, and how we can assist you within this process. It’s a short questionnaire yet allows us to have a strong starting point for achieving the end goal.

The process is simple to start, firstly from a showroom visit, followed closely by a home visit. Within the showroom we get to know you, your wants & dislikes, even how you and your partner differ on ideas, and as a designer, we try to put all your ideas together into the best working solution. However, if you are reading this and thinking about you and your relationship, you probably already know who’s going to get what they want…

Anyway, focusing on the home visit, this is where we measure the entirety of the affected space as this is key to creating the fitted kitchen, as no surprise here: the design/kitchen must fit…
This is assuming you already have the space available, alternatively, we do a multitude of work from architect plans to the likes of new builds and extensions. In both cases, as much information as you can give us results in the best-fitted kitchen to suit you.

It’s a quite simple part of the process, yet crucial as it defines the ramifications of the design, and wrong measurements lead to outcomes that simply will not work. It seems obvious, but to ensure the best outcome, I would personally always come out and do a re-measure after the design process, prior to the order, allowing me to work out where we have the flexibility and to check everything will work as per the design.

Alongside the practicality and ergonomics of a fitted kitchen, there tends to be an overall look that comes with it, in reference to it appearing that it belongs, and it’s meant to be there. It comes down to a personal preference on if you want your kitchen to stand out or blend into its surroundings, yet structurally fitted kitchens tend to look built-in. There are several ways of doing this, a key method is to stud workaround and plastering over, therefore achieving the built within the wall look.

Alternatively, you can board around in panel material, this creates a feature, which can add an additional element to your kitchen. Another unique, yet more practical way, is bespoke elements, which allows us to stack units up to your ceiling. This is ideal for storing your once-a-year items, yet may require the occasional use of a ladder…

Thanks to our furniture brand and their unique design elements, we can make practical use of negative wall spaces, using concepts known as the Orga wall and Cube system. This concept is driven to turn an impractical space into a functional area, for example (in reference to the above image), we can clad the wall in panel material to create a hanging system, making practical and imaginative use of a blank wall. Utilising space is an integral part of creating a fitted kitchen.
